History of Golf

Golf was established in Great Britain by the 17th century. In the 1800s the feather filled ball was replaced for the modern ball used today. In 1860 the first golf tournament was open and was called the  British Open. The first golf club in North America, was the  Canada’s Royal Montreal Club that was founded in 1873. The United States Golf Association (USGA) was founded in 1894 and from then on was the governing body of the sport. Another association that was established in 1916 was named The Professional Golf Association (PGA) that made all the decision about tournament at a professional level.

The Professional Golf Association decided to create a tournament were professional and amateurs were allowed to play. The reason for this is to give the amateur a full out experience of how it is in a professional level. It was an Open tournament were anyone could compete in the event. Some examples of a Open tournament are the US Open and the British Open. In the 1920s the sport started to impress many people and from then on it started to gain its popularity.
